The Accra MRO Project
Developing West Africa's Premier Aircraft Maintenance Hub
Project Status
The Accra MRO Project is currently in the development phase, with support from USTDA, Lufthansa Consulting, and the Government of Ghana. The facility is planned for operational launch in the coming years.

Project Objectives
Following detailed consultations in the host country, the project has been prioritized by the Government of Ghana to help achieve the following macro objectives:
To develop Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as a regional aviation hub, stimulating economic growth and development.
To help reduce the cost of air travel in the region through local maintenance capabilities.

Strategic Partnerships
The project benefits from strong institutional support and strategic partnerships that ensure its successful development:
- USTDA: Technical assistance and feasibility study support
- Lufthansa Consulting: Strategic planning and operational design
- Government of Ghana: Infrastructure support and regulatory framework
- Ghana Air Force: Strategic partnership for facility development

Expected Economic Benefits
The Accra MRO Project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Ghana and the wider West African region:
- Creation of high-skilled technical jobs in the aviation sector
- Reduction in aircraft maintenance costs for regional airlines
- Foreign exchange savings by localizing MRO services in Africa
- Technology transfer and advanced skills development
- Positioning Ghana as a regional aviation maintenance hub
- Attraction of foreign investment in aviation infrastructure
- Enhanced regional connectivity and trade facilitation

Regional Impact & Vision
Currently, African airlines must send their aircraft to Europe, Middle East, or Asia for major maintenance work, resulting in significant costs and operational disruptions. The Accra MRO facility is being developed to address this gap by providing world-class maintenance services within Africa.
The strategic location at Kotoka International Airport will make it accessible to airlines across West and Central Africa, significantly reducing ferry flight times and maintenance costs for the region's aviation industry.
